Angel Custodio Loyola

Angel Custodio Loyola was a singer and composer from Venezuela. He was born at the Mata Arzolera, a small village of El Socorro, Guarico, Venezuela. As a young child he learned farmwork, and started to hear music in 1940 when he was in the fourth grade. He was a fan of singers like Eliseo Flores, Juan de la Cruz Perez, Ricardo Acevedo, Ramon Delgado, and Angel Acevedo. He then wanted to become a primary historical interpreter and singer. He left home with no consent from his parents, to pursue a career as a folk singer. At the age of 18 he sang Oliveros formally for the first time. Loyola would eventually learn to execute the harp and to cultivate his voice, becoming one of the best Venezuelan joropo singers.
He had his first music lesson with harpist Perez Acosta, and got a lot of help from many well recognized musicians. His fame came to be in the year of 1947, having the nickname “The Renco Loyola.” He was recommended to the famous Juan Vincente Torrealba by Antonio Jose Abraham. Torrealba took him to Caracas to record with his musical group, the Torrealberos. Loyola eventually removed himself from the group and started to sing alongside El Indio Figueredo. In 1954 he founded his own group called the Angel Custodio Loyola and Guariquenos.
